What is an Orthotist?

An Orthotist is a health professional who assesses and prescribes an orthosis. An orthosis is the true word for a brace or orthopaedic appliance that is designed and fitted to the body. The orthosis is fitted to achieve the following

• Reduce or eliminate pain
• Increase mobility and independence
• Control biomechanical alignment

What does an orthotist typically treat and fit?

• Foot Orthotics for various foot problems such as Plantar Fasciitis, Heel spurs, and many other foot problems.
• Orthopaedic braces for both upper limb and lower limb pathologies.
• Spinal bracing
• Post operative braces
• Fracture Management eg/ Moonboot, fibreglass casting (waterproof).
• Compression Stockings
• Orthopaedic footwear

Do you need a referral?

No. However it may be necessary to get one if your private health fund requires it for the purpose of issuing you with a rebate. I personally receive referrals from Physiotherapists, Podiatrists, GP’s, Osteopaths, Orthopaedic Surgeons, and other members of the Allied Health Team.
